The beginning of the SCAF Instructional Fiscal Year begins January 1 of each calendar year. SCAF offers four USA Water Polo Certification Clinics each year, two each of the Southern Pacific and Coastal California Zones of USA Water Polo. These are the two zones that SCAF services. These four clinics will usually take place between January 1 and April 30. Ideally, this is the best time to start officiating.
In addition to these four clinics, each of the zones may offer additional clinics per year as needed, funded by the area chapters of SCAF rather than SCAF, the latest of these taking place in June, which will conclude certification for officiating USA Water Polo events.
For the NFHS and NCAA seasons SCAF funds a joint "All-SCAF" NISCA (high school) and NCAA clinic during the first week of September. Each area of SCAF is mandated to have 5 more NISCA mini-clinics, 3 during the boy's high school season, and 2 during the girl's high school season. The curricula is standardized by the SCAF Instructional Chair. This is not an ideal time for new referees to start as these are usually the highest priority seasons for the high school and collegiate teams, however exceptions have been made as needed for those qualified.
SCAF dues are $100 per calendar year. Note that $50 of
this amount goes to SCAF and $50 goes to the area which you declare as your
primary area.
The amount going to SCAF covers all and is not limited to the following:
1) $10 to USAWP for Instructional Materials Development
2) NFHS and NCAA Rule Books, and access to USAWP Rules and Interpretations
3) The use of the SCAF web site to securely manage your registrations throughout
the year, as well as to offer you a secure way to give access to your personal
information so that you can be compensated in a timely manner throughout each of
the seasons throughout the year.
4) Access to weekly online submission of availability in order for you to get
USAWP assignments.
5) Access to timely posting of NFHS and NCAA assignments to verify your
schedules and possible changes.
6) Assignor access to post changes at their leisure, 24/7/365.
7) Access to the SCAF calendar to check upcoming competitions, meetings, and
clinics.
8) Mentoring and evaluations at major competitions
9) Online incident reporting form to make reporting of incidents easier for the
end user referee
10) The sponsoring of four major USAWP clinics, one major NFHS clinic, and one
major NCAA clinic (note: if you do not attend any of the SCAF sponsors clinics,
then you will be charged additional instructions fees for your mandatory
clinics)
11) The continual pursuit for higher referee fees to get more referees to
officiate and to keep up with the costs of living increases and increasing fuel
costs.
12) The access to make between $10,000 and $20,000 as a SCAF referee if you
referee year-round at each different level if qualified.
The amount going to your area covers but is not limited to the following:
1) local area mentioning as each area see fit
2) special area membership meetings
3) instructional meetings in addition to the above mentioned SCAF sponsored
clinics.
4) Other projects as each area and it membership see fit.
That's what you get for your annual SCAF dues. In addition to this, to officiate USA Water Polo Events you must also be a registered Referee or Coach/Referee member of USA Water Polo.
For USA Water Polo competitions, an assignor's fee of $1 per game assigned per referee when there are two officials assigned is taken from your games fees. See "fee schedules" at this site for more information.
For NFHS (high school) assignor's fees, area may differ from one another, however this is usually "one triple-header assignment" to cover the entire season's assignments. For instance, if a triple-header fees is $91, your assignors fee for that entire three-month season is $90. If that fee that you earn goes up to $107, then the assignor's fee for that season is $100; basically you work one afternoon for the entire season's assignor's fee. Some area may charge a per game fee instead; contact your area president for more information.
There are currently no assignor's fees for NCAA
assignments as the conferences themselves pay those assignors.
